Resident Information

Curbside Refuse, Recycling and Landscape
Collection Program

The Village of Cary’s volume-based refuse, recycling and landscape waste collection programs with Groot Industries include both refuse and recycling cart rental and bag disposal options. Residents have the option to select a refuse cart (95 or 35 gallon) or refuse bag for their refuse collection. Regardless of the option, residents must contact Groot at (800) 244-1977 to sign-up for this service.

95 GALLON REFUSE CART PROGRAM

This program allows for refuse to be placed in a 95 gallon Groot cart. All additional refuse that is placed outside of the cart must be placed in a pre-paid Cary refuse bag. The 95 gallon cart option is best suited for a majority of households in Cary that easily generate two or more bags of refuse per week. Effective September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012, the monthly rate for a 95 gallon refuse cart is $23.25.

35 GALLON REFUSE CART PROGRAM

This program allows for refuse to be placed in a 35 gallon Groot refuse cart. Additional refuse that is placed outside of the cart must be placed in a pre-paid Cary refuse bag. If you average one bag of refuse per week, the 35 gallon cart option is the preferred method over paying $4.15 per Cary refuse bag. Effective September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012, the monthly rate for a 35 gallon refuse cart is $18.00.

CARY REFUSE BAG PROGRAM

The Cary refuse bag program allows for refuse to be placed in one of the designated pre-paid Cary refuse bags. Refuse that is placed in non-Groot cans or other containers will not be collected.

Note: If you place on average one (1) refuse bag out per week, the 35 gallon cart option is a more cost-efficient option overall.

CARY SINGLE-SORT RECYCLING PROGRAM

Regardless of which refuse program you choose, each household will receive (1) free 35 gallon recycling cart. Recyclable materials are collected on the same day as your regular day of service. Residents do not have to sort their recyclable materials, as this takes place at one of Groot's automated recycling plants. For a complete list of recyclable materials, click here.

COLLECTION DAYS

Collection takes place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of every week. Click here to see the map that designates the route collection schedule. Please have all materials out for collection by 6:30 a.m. of your designated collection day.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

The following holidays will affect the regularly scheduled collections in the Village of Cary.

New Year’s Day • Memorial Day • July 4th • Labor Day • Thanksgiving Day • Christmas Day

If the holiday falls on a weekday, (on or before your scheduled collection), service will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the holiday week. If the holiday falls on a Sunday it will be observed on Monday and delay service by one day for the remainder of the week.

SERVICE INTERRUPTIONS FOR VACATIONS

Residents are allowed to interrupt service for vacations once per year. Residents will not be charged during their service interruptions. Service interruptions must be between 30 and 90 days. Residents must notify Groot of the stop and resume dates at least seven (7) days in advance of the service interruption.

ANNUAL SPRING CLEAN-UP

Groot will be providing a spring clean-up where residents place unlimited non-hazardous waste at the curb for collection. Clean-up services will be conducted on your regular day of collection, Monday through Friday. Residents will be notified through local media on clean-up dates and guidelines.

YARD WASTE PROGRAM GUIDELINES

Yard waste stickers are required on all yard waste bags or bundled brush. One sticker per biodegradable paper bag or bundled brush is required for collection. NO plastic bags may be used for yard waste collection.

• Yard waste materials are collected on your regular collection day.

• Each biodegradable bag, container or brush bundle of yard waste material must have one service sticker affixed for collection.

• Biodegradable bags and containers clearly marked for disposal of compostable materials CANNOT exceed a total weight of 50 pounds.

• Yard waste which is too bulky to be placed in a bag or other container, such as branches or brush, must be securely tied (with biodegradable twine), bundled and stickered. Bundles may not exceed 5 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter or 50 pounds in weight. Groot will leave any improperly bagged, bundled or containerized compostable landscape waste at the curbsite with a written notice of violation.

REFUSE BAGS & YARD WASTESTICKER RETAILERS

Refuse bags (5 & 10 bag quantities) and yard waste stickers are sold at the following locations:

• Cary Village Hall (Stickers Only)

• Ziegler’s Ace Hardware

• Cary Walgreens

• Cary Jewel

Effective September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012, yard waste stickers are $2.90 per sticker.

BULK ITEMS

Bulk items, such as regular household furniture that are set out for collection, must have one pre-paid Cary refuse bag attached to each item that is placed out for collection.

APPLIANCES, CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS & WHITE GOODS

Groot asks that residents who place construction debris, and/or appliances out for collection to call our office to schedule a special pick-up. Residents will receive an estimate for the cost of removal of these items. Payment for special services is required prior to collection. The special pick-up will be completed within the week in which it is requested.

LEAF STICKER PROGRAM

Between October 1 and November 30, Groot will pick up leaves placed in biodegradable bags with a “Leaf Sticker” affixed to the bag. Leaf stickers will be sold for $0.85 throughout the term of the five-year contract. No bag may exceed a total weight, when filled, of 50 pounds. Further, plastic bags may not be used as a container for the disposal of leaves.

GENERAL BILLING INFORMATION

Groot will be billing residents for solid waste services. Residents will be invoiced quarterly in advance of service, with the invoice indicating the period of service and the due date. Invoices will be sent to residents the month before the service period begins and payments are due on the first day of the first month of the three month billing period. For example, if a resident receives an invoice on December 1 for services to be provided during the months of January, February and March, payment will be due on January 1. After 30 days, unpaid bills will be considered past due, and are subject to a 3.75% service charge per quarterly billing cycle.

OLD CAN REMOVAL

Please leave a note for the driver to discard your old refuse can or bin. Old recycling bins can also be taken by Groot to be recycled via a note as well.
