Maintenance and Utility Worker

The Village of Cary, IL (18,271), a northwest suburb of Chicago, is seeking to fill the position of Maintenance and Utility Worker within the Public Works Department.  The ideal candidate must have excellent customer service skills, the ability to operate heavy equipment and tools, assess problems and perform basic calculations.  The candidate must also have a passion for public service.  Snow plowing experience is desired, with Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License necessary within 60 days of employment.  Experience in road construction, water treatment, or wastewater treatment is a plus.  This is a non-supervisory position.

Essential Functions 

  • Maintenance, installation, service, routine operation and repair of fire hydrants, water mains, water service lines, water meters, wells, pumps, motors, water storage facilities, softening systems, lift stations, control systems, and the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Maintenance and repair of roadway, water, sewer, and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Response to emergency situations such as the repair of water mains, the clearing of roads during hazardous weather and other conditions including snow/ice events, storm-related debris, and floods.
  • Snow plowing and ice control functions.
  • Completion of homeowner service requests - e.g. service line shut-offs, leak and accuracy tests, and other related requests.
  • Performs other related work and other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.  Previous experience in construction or public utilities is desired, with IEPA water and/or wastewater certification a plus.  Candidates must obtain their Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 60 days of employment.  Candidates should possess the ability to solve problems comprehensively and perform in a fast paced environment.  Flexibility in working both independently and as part of a team is highly desirable. 

Salary

The compensation for the position is expected to be $51,000 +/- per year, commensurate with level of experience.  This is a full-time, non-exempt position.  The Village of Cary offers excellent benefits including a generous performance stipend program, training and certification opportunities, health insurance, life insurance, dental/vision insurance, vacation/sick/personal leave and IMRF pension.

On-Call Part-Time School Crossing Guard

The Village of Cary is currently accepting applications to fill the position of an on-call part-time School Crossing Guard.  This is a seasonal position with work occurring during the school calendar year.  This position requires a dependable, responsible adult who will work to ensure the safety of the young residents in the community. 

Essential Duties:

  • Monitor vehicular traffic and pedestrians in school zones in a manner to ensure pedestrians are not endangered when crossing the street
  • Coordinate and time the stopping of vehicular traffic within the scope of provided training
  • Establish a cooperative working relationship with school representatives and Cary Police Department personnel

 Requirements:     

  • Must be attentive and able to anticipate situations that may become unsafe
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and deal with the public and school children in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Ability to review, comprehend and understand various documents relevant to the performance of the position
  • Must be able to be on-call for the morning (8:00 am – 8:45 am) and afternoon (11:20 am – 12:35 pm and 3:30 pm – 4:15) shifts
  • Self-motivated to perform duties safely and to be punctual and productive at all times with little or no direct supervision

Working Conditions:

  • Duties are performed outside in all types of weather conditions
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods
