Engineering Technician

The Village of Cary, IL (18,271), a northwest suburb of Chicago, is seeking a full-time Engineering Technician within the Public Works Department. The ideal candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills, strong customer service skills and a passion for public service.  The position will report directly to the Public Works Director.

Essential Functions

  • Performs inspection of construction projects in order to ensure that public improvements are being installed in conformance with approved engineering plans and specifications. Monitors and inspects all construction aspects of streets, water mains, sewers, lighting, grading, stormwater management facilities, and similar improvements.
  • Performs public outreach with property owners before and during construction activities to ensure proactive coordination of temporary driveway closures, detours, or other disruptions.
  • Processes applications for public utility and right-of-way permits and inspections. Reviews materials for completeness and conformance with established regulations, approved plans, and procedures.
  • Assists in preparation of bid documents and contracts for award of various equipment, construction, consultant, and maintenance program awards.
  • Collect field data and other design information for special reports or engineering studies.
  • Updates and maintains utility atlas databases and G.I.S. mapping for both new construction and corrections identified by field staff.
  • Participates in snow plowing operations for Village-maintained streets, designated winter pedestrian routes, and other Village-owned property.


A high school diploma or equivalent is required with minimum of four (4) years of experience in construction, construction management, civil engineering, public utilities or related field.  A similar combination of education and experience may be considered.  Candidates are required to have knowledge of road and utility construction and must obtain their Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 3 months of employment.  Candidates should possess the ability to solve problems comprehensively and perform in a fast paced environment.  Flexibility in working both independently and as part of a team is highly desirable.  


The salary range for the position is $55,000+/- depending on qualifications.  This is a non-exempt position.  The Village of Cary offers excellent benefits including health insurance, life insurance, dental/vision insurance, vacation/sick/personal leave and IMRF pension.

Part-Time School Crossing Guard

The Village of Cary is currently accepting applications to fill the position of an on-call
part-time School Crossing Guard.  This is a seasonal position with work occurring
during the school calendar year.  This position requires a dependable, responsible
adult who will work to ensure the safety of the young residents in the community.

Essential Duties

Monitor vehicular traffic and pedestrians in school zones in a manner to ensure
pedestrians are not endangered when crossing the street

Coordinate and time the stopping of vehicular traffic within the scope of
provided training
Establish a cooperative working relationship with school representatives and
Cary Police Department personnel


Must be attentive and able to anticipate situations that may become unsafe

Must be able to effectively communicate and deal with the public and school
children in a courteous and respectful manner

Ability to review, comprehend and understand various documents relevant to the
performance of the position

Must be able to work morning (8:00 am - 8:45 am) and afternoon
(11:20 am - 12:35 pm and 3:00 pm - 3:45 pm) shifts as an on-call employee

Self-motivated to perform duties safely and to be punctual and productive at all times
with little or no direct supervision

Working Conditions

Duties are performed outside in all types of weather conditions

Requires standing and walking for extended periods
