Part Time Summer Help - Office Assistant
Public Works Department

DESCRIPTION:

The Village of Cary is seeking one (1) temporary summer help position to assist the Public Works Department with various routine administrative support functions.  The position provides candidates with an opportunity to assist in the operations of every division of the department, including Streets, Water & Sanitation, and Engineering.  Duties include, but are not limited to:  Disseminating service requests from residents to the appropriate staff, taking telephone calls from the public, data entry, filing, registering guests/vendors/deliveries through the security gate, assisting with the department’s various public outreach and marketing efforts, and other public works projects as assigned.  Position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Public Works.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.  Successful applicants will be dependable, have a strong work ethic, and be committed to providing outstanding service.  Candidate must be able to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with coworkers and the public.  Previous experience with Microsoft Office and work in an office environment a plus.  Hours are 8:00 am-4:30 pm Monday –Friday with a 1/2 hour unpaid lunch daily. Working overtime may be required from time to time.  Job activities include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, sitting, reaching, occasionally lifting and/or moving (up to 25 pounds), and repetitive motions in an office setting.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, medical and drug screening. 

SALARY/HOW TO APPLY:

Hourly Rate: $10.00/hr.  This is a temporary, part-time position with no fringe benefits.  Approximate dates of employment are May/June 2015 through August/September 2015.

Part Time Summer Help - Public Works
Public Works Department

DESCRIPTION:

The Village of Cary is seeking up to four (4) temporary summer help positions to assist the Public Works Department with various routine maintenance tasks and engineering projects related to Village-owned roadways and facilities.  The position provides candidates with an opportunity to assist in the operations of every division of the department, including Streets, Water & Sanitation, and Engineering.  Duties include, but are not limited to:  performing basic building maintenance tasks, landscape work, engineering data collection, Geographical Information System mapping updates, relocating/moving cold storage items, painting, data entry, responding to employee work order requests and assisting with other manual labor duties.  Other related duties and projects as assigned.  Position reports directly to the Public Works Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.  Successful applicants will be dependable, have a strong work ethic, and be committed to providing outstanding service.  Candidate must be able to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with coworkers and the public.  Previous experience with small tools, performing routine maintenance and computers is a plus.  Outdoor work is required, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.  Hours are 7:00 am-3:30 pm Monday –Friday with a 1/2 hour unpaid lunch daily. Working overtime and weekends may be required from time to time.  Job activities include frequent bending, lifting, reaching, standing, carrying, and pulling. Job requires exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally; 10-25 lbs. frequently; or up to 10 lbs. constantly.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, medical and drug screening.

On-Call Part-Time School Crossing Guard

The Village of Cary is currently accepting applications to fill the position of an on-call part-time School Crossing Guard.  This is a seasonal position with work occurring during the school calendar year.  This position requires a dependable, responsible adult who will work to ensure the safety of the young residents in the community. 

Essential Duties:

  • Monitor vehicular traffic and pedestrians in school zones in a manner to ensure pedestrians are not endangered when crossing the street
  • Coordinate and time the stopping of vehicular traffic within the scope of provided training
  • Establish a cooperative working relationship with school representatives and Cary Police Department personnel

 Requirements:     

  • Must be attentive and able to anticipate situations that may become unsafe
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and deal with the public and school children in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Ability to review, comprehend and understand various documents relevant to the performance of the position
  • Must be able to be on-call for the morning (8:00 am – 8:45 am) and afternoon (11:20 am – 12:35 pm and 3:30 pm – 4:15) shifts
  • Self-motivated to perform duties safely and to be punctual and productive at all times with little or no direct supervision

Working Conditions:

  • Duties are performed outside in all types of weather conditions
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods
