Unified Development Ordinance

The Village of Cary has approved a comprehensive update to its development regulations in 2019. The result of this update is the new Unified Development Ordinance, or UDO. The main focus of the code update was to make the code more user friendly and utilize best planning practices. Existing standards within the code which were still applicable were retained and placed within the revised UDO's structure. Some areas of the code, however, were redrafted to clearly define review processes, code requirements and better achieve the Village's land use vision. The Unified Development Ordinance can be found in Title 14 of the Village's Municipal Code.

The UDO will guide future land use development in Cary’s neighborhoods, downtown, corridors, and employment areas. For comparison, the last comprehensive update to the Village’s Zoning Ordinance was performed in 1997 and the Village Sign Ordinance in 2001.
